MackSolo Team Update – Day 127 ✈️ 🌍
Hola, a todos y todas! Yesterday Mack flew from Palo Alto, via Newport Beach, California, #USA 🇺🇸, to #sanjosedelcabo, #Mexico 🇲🇽, the 23rd country on his solo flight around the world! 💪Thank you so much for the enthusiastic welcome everywhere!!! 🙏
Mack is now in the air and on his way to leave the Mexican mainland back out over the Pacific Ocean. But why? Why not stick to the mainland?
Well, the reason is that he needs to hit his SECOND ANTIPODAL. As his first Antipodal was located somewhere near Rodrigues island (East of Madagascar), his second antipodal has to be on the exact opposite of the globe (imagine piercing an orange with a skewer). In his case a random point somewhere over the pacific Ocean near Isla #socorro.
Socorro is one of the 4 active volcanic islands 🌋 of the Revillagigedo Archipelago. The last eruption of Socorro was in 1993. Zara experienced an earthquake when she landed in Veracruz last September 😅, fingers crossed Mack is not in for a volcanic eruption... 🤞
Isla Socorro is also a military base, where civilian aircraft would only be permitted with special permission from the President. Guess what? Yihaaaa!!! Mack will be landing at the MM8 Mexican Navy base today.
As Isla Socorro is near the proposed 2nd antipodal point, Flight Ops started feverishly looking into the maths for the antipodal points and came up with the following calculations:
➡️ Antipodal 1, coordinates: -17.96226° - 65.10125°
➡️ Could Socorro, MM81, located 18.775479° -110.930407°, perhaps be valid as Antipodal 2?
The difference with the originally calculated point over the Pacific (18.012°N - 110.98°) is:
➡️ 0.81° latitude and 3.95° longitude = a total 4.76°
➡️ This is less than a 5° difference = within the Guinness Rules
We are therefore extremely happy to announce Guinness has now officially confirmed Socorro is acceptable as Mack's second antipodal. Wooooohoooooo!!! This saves Mack more flying time over open oceans, therefore less risk. So after MM81 he will be headed back for the mainland.
